NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND CADET LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE
- June 17th-20th 2013
Ten students from the Corps of Cadets traveled to Northfield, Vermont to attend the Northern New England Cadet Leadership Challenge 17-21 June. The cadets met with cadets from eight other schools from Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont at Wilson Hall at Norwich University. Cadets participated in various activities and many leadership training opportunities throughout their stay. The cadets conducted land navigation, the high ropes challenge course at Northern Lights Rock and Ice in Essex, Vermont; knot tying, canoeing and kayaking on the Winooski River, a map reading course, and a first aid course. Particularly challenging was the Leadership Reaction Course. Groups of seven cadets participated in overcoming the different obstacles and rotating through leadership positions. During the reaction course the squad leader’s leadership skills were tested. The five days were fun and rewarding to all the cadets who participated.

Memorial Day Parade- 2013
May 27th, 2013 sixty-one members of the North Country Union High School Corps of Cadets marched down Main Street in Newport to Gardener Park to honor our Nation’s fallen service members. The Corps of Cadets provided two Color Guards, followed by Honor Guard, the entire battalion of cadets, ending with the Exhibition Team. The Exhibition Team provided a demonstration of spinning of the rifles to the people down Main Street and all the way to Gardener Park. The Honor Guard stood on the bridge standing at present arms as the Color Guard’s passed. The Honor Guard ended the ceremony for our Nation’s fallen service members by firing a twenty-one shot volley.

Raider Competition
April 20th, 2013 the Falcon Raider Team competed at a regional Raider Competition at White Mountain High School against three other Raider Teams from Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The Falcon Raiders competed in a series of challenges that tested their ability of thinking, physical fitness, and team work. The challenges included: an Army Physical Fitness Test, general knowledge test, land navigation course, one Rope Bridge, and a five kilometer road march. The Falcon Raider team achieved an overall standing of second place.
Newport Naval Station Field Trip
From April 15th to April 17th, cadets from the North Country Union High School JROTC Falcon Battalion traveled to Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island to tour and stay overnight at the naval base. The cadets lived in the Navy barracks and ate meals in the Navy dining facility. This trip allowed the cadets to see what a naval base was like and participate in the Surface Ship Simulator. The simulator allowed the cadets to practice steering and navigation in a simulated San Francisco harbor. While on base, the cadets also visited the Naval Station Newport Museum. The cadets also did activities off of the base, like traveling to Battleship Cove in Fall River, Massachusetts to see ships and submarines used in war. At Battleship Cove, the cadets toured the battleship USS Massachusetts, the destroyer USS Joseph P. Kennedy, and the submarine USS Lionfish seeing where sailors slept, ate, and fought. In addition the cadets saw two of the only surviving PT boats from World War II. On 17 April, the cadets toured the Lexington and Concord battlefields almost 250 years after the “Shot heard around the world.”
Veterans Day: November 11th, 2012
Veteran’s Day was held at the Newport Municipal building and opened by the presentation of the colors by the Falcon Battalion Color Guard combined with the American Legion Color Guard. The procedure was coordinated as two Color Guards blended into one. The Corps of Cadets formed into a battalion mass with both Companies together. The Newport City Elementary Band played several selections in between speakers. We were present to honor our veterans and to listen to their stories.
Northern Lights Rock and Ice High Ropes Adventure - 1st October
On 1 October the Falcon Battalion Corps of Cadets participated in the Northern Lights Rock and Ice High ropes adventure training in Essex, Vermont. Approximately half of the corps of cadets participated in this team building and personal challenge event on Vermont's most challenging high ropes course. Despite the rain showers, the cadets fully enjoyed themselves learning how to go beyond their individual fears to complete the course as a team.
Fitness Day Support - 28th September
The Falcon Battalion Junior ROTC cadets provided the opening color guard, a drill sequence and fitness day support for the North Country Union High School Fitness Day 28 September. These cadets performed an opening color guard sequence for the Fitness Day opening. A drill sequence was performed at a basic level for the grade schools as well. Throughout the day Falcon Battalion cadets provided demonstrations of fitness and team activities.
Freshman Falcon Field Days - 13 & 14 August
The Falcon Battalion Junior ROTC cadet leaders supported the high school teachers during Freshman Field Days 13 and 14 August. Cadets helped facilitate the program held at North Country Union High School and at Coutts Moriarity Camp. The freshman Field Day program provided a positive orientation for incoming freshman in activities with older high school students acting as mentors. The cadet leaders performed as positive role models and and assisted the teachers throughout the activities.
Memorial Day 2012
May, 2012- Sixty-five North Country Union High School Junior ROTC cadets, led by the battalion color guard, marched in the Newport Memorial Day parade honoring our local veterans who made sacrifices in service to our Nation. The exhibition drill team performed a variety of drill maneuvers while spinning replica M 1903 Springfield drill rifles. The Falcon Battalion Corps of Cadets listened to various speakers describe the service of our local veterans. At the completion of the ceremony, the cadet honor guard fired three volleys in honor of our deceased veterans.
